Devlog #7 - Violet Void Wisp Complete, Level Design Delays, and Sonic Symphony!

Hey everyone! Time for another weekly devlog!

Violet Void Functionally Complete:

This week, more work was performed on the Violet Void wisp color power. This included implementing its ability to grow in size the more it has consumed as well as the change in speed and suction radius it experiences as it grows. After some testing, I believe both of these features are in a good spot and, functionally, the power is pretty much complete. You can check it out in the GIF below.

While the Violet Void color power is functionally complete, I wanted to acknowledge that it is not visually complete. The sprite shown off in these GIFs is temporary and I plan on creating a better one for the final game.

Sweet Mountain Mission 3 Delay:

With the violet void color power functionally complete my plan was to begin working on Mission 3 of Sweet Mountain, but I have unfortunately run into some issues. I recently moved across the country and neglected to take my desktop PC with me, opting to develop on my laptop instead. My laptop has a weaker GPU than my desktop and GameMaker’s IDE runs on the GPU. As a result, I’ve run into an issue where the IDE now lags when trying to edit some of the game’s larger and more complicated levels. This lag is highly intrusive and makes editing the levels near impossible, which has delayed my ability to start working on Sweet Mountain Mission 3. I’ve posted a question about this in the official GameMaker Discord help forum and am seeking assistance from other developers on potential solutions. Until the issue is resolved, I will have to put editing new levels on hold.

Sonic Symphony:

In slightly more exciting news, I attended the Washington D.C. showing of the Sonic Symphony World Tour! My older sister and I went together and had the best time ever! My favorite part had to be the jaw-droppingly beautiful medley they did of Aquarium Park and Planet Wisp as well as their performance of the boss themes from Sonic Frontiers (the entire crowd was headbanging when “Break Through It All” started playing!). I also ran into an incredible Blaze the Cat cosplayer that was nice enough to take a picture with me. You can check out some pics I took at the concert below (you can probably tell, but most of the pics I took were from the Sonic Colors portion of the concert, haha):

If any of you live in cities where the concert is showing you have to go see it, it’s amazing!!!

Conclusion:

That’s it for this week’s devlog! I’m going to try my hardest to find a solution to the IDE lag issue and get back to work as soon as I do!

I’ll catch you all next week; and remember, don’t fall apart, speak with your heart!
